Volunteering at INFORM

INTERNSHIPS

INFORM offers flexible internships throughout the academic year and summer months. Every effort is made to ensure that interns contribute substantively to the projects that interest them most, while being exposed to all facets of the work we do. You may also be able to get academic credit for your time, so check with your school or college.


Green Cleaning Research Internship

INFORM pursues its goal of chemical policy reform through its Cleaning for Heath initiative. We do this by identifying toxic substances of concern and promoting the use of safer products and practices through outreach and technical assistance. Our aim is to protect workers, students, building occupants in general, and the environment from the adverse impacts of cleaning chemicals.

We are currently seeking an intern(s) to conduct comprehensive research in the following areas:

• The health and environmental impacts of anti-bacterial soaps
• Green Cleaning Legislation at the state level.
• Current Green Cleaning policies and practices in schools and hospitals.
• General research on the effect of conventional cleaning products on health, the toxicity of non green cleaning products and effect on the environment
• Links between asthma and cleaning products
• Green Cleaning in Schools in New York City

The intern will also be involved in compiling this research into reports, surveys, factsheets, website content, and manuals. This internship is ideal for anyone interested in public health, children’s health, toxicity and environmental issues, environmental / public health legislation and chemical policy reform.

Secret Life Series Internship

INFORM's Secret Life Series is a collection of short videos that highlight the environmental impacts of everyday products on the environment and human health.

The Secret Life Series internship offers qualified individuals an opportunity to work on the production of our video series, a project which seeks to educate the general public about important environmental issues and to empower viewers to take meaningful action. Each video is associated with a campaign website that provides additional information about the issue, and requires careful research and planning.

The intern, who will work directly with the project manager on both the video and website, should have a solid background in environmental studies and research.

Responsibilities will include:

• Research
• Developing content for the website
• Additional duties depending upon needs of the particular project

Web/IT Internship

We are looking for a tech savvy Web and IT Assistant to help us build a stronger web presence and keep others staffers productively focused. The successful candidate will be someone with web development skills who enjoys interacting on social networking sites, someone who is good natured, who can wear more than one hat and meet deadlines consistently, and who is passionate about the environment and sustainability issues.

Responsibilities wil include:

• Assist web/communications team in keeping content current on all web properties
• In house IT support for staff members
• Web site maintenance projects as defined by web strategist
• Occasional graphic design work
• Posting our materials on other sites and social networks
• Maintaining office stock for printers – inks, paper etc
• Review website materials for out of date content

Qualifications and Skills:

• Experience handcoding HTML, comfortable in mySQL, php
• Photoshop and InDesign
• Strong communication and excellent writing skills.
• Good graphic design skills; superior design sensibility and ability to translate concepts visually.
• Comfortable interacting in social networks and enjoys connecting with people online.
• General technical comfort, willingness to learn and assist other busy staff members with technical glitches.
• Apache servers
  
• Applicants must have at least 2 years experience coding and IT support to be considered.

Communication Internship

The Communication Internship offers the right candidate the opportunity to:

• assist in the crucial work of building the Communication Department;
  
• investigate potential audiences and outreach partners for INFORM's research and advocacy initiatives;
  
• collaboratively develop and implement communication strategies for particular research reports and the organization as a whole; and
  
• conduct public relations functions for the organization under the direct supervision of the Communication Strategist.

Development Internship

The Development Internship provides high school juniors and seniors or college students the chance to be involved in all aspects of fundraising activities and donor relations at INFORM. Responsibilities include:

• conducting research on potential donors, foundations and corporations;
  
• data entry and relationship database management;
  
• working with senior research associates on various INFORM projects; and,
  
• assist in the planning and coordination of fundraising events, including our annual fundraiser.
