How to Clean Trane Electronic Air Filter

How to Clean Trane Electronic Air Filter

You can install an electronic air filter with your heating and cooling system ductwork to ensure excellent whole-home filtration. The electronic air filter will keep the air inside the house clean by removing contaminants and dust particles. You need to clean the electronic air filter as necessary for the best efficiency.

How to clean Trane electronic air filter

The Trane CleanEffects whole-home air cleaner is made with innovative technology, removes up to 99.98% of airborne particles, and it’s eight times more efficient than the best HEPA filters. To clean Trane electronic air filters, you need to follow the steps below:

  • Start by turning off the unit. Let the unit power entirely down. Pay attention to the LEDs as they’re slowly turning off.
  • You also need to unplug the power source to make sure that the power is off to remove the door on the unit safely.
  • Remove the door from the two-door latches and remove the pre-filter.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the pre-filter regularly. According to the pre-set filter maintenance, the reminder is set to two months. However, according to the condition of your household, you can change the reminder to 1 to 3 months.

If you deal with allergies, have pets, and smoke inside, we recommend following a more frequent cleaning cycle.

A certified HVAC technician should do the following steps. You will need to clean the IFD charger and the component is rather sensitive. Pay extra attention and gently handle the IFD charger if you clean the cell component. Additionally, the pins inside are very sharp and you can damage them or injure yourself.

Consider using a clean rug to wipe down the IFD plate if necessary. You can also gently vacuum the plate.

Use a styrofoam block to clean the pins. You will also need to rotate the block and clean the faceplate edges.

The collection cells need cleaning every six months. You can use the vacuum cleaner on the collection cells, using even strokes in one direction. When done, do the same from the opposite direction.

Some models will allow cleaning with water, and you should pay attention to your model. If the collection cells don’t have a 200 or 200_1 mark on them, washing the cells will cause damage. Details on washing the cells come down below.

Recommendation

We recommend you clean the electronic filter outside the house, so that trap particles and contaminants don’t go back into the air stream.

Put the air filter back in its place:

  • Seek that the cell components are in the correct place
  • Re-latch the door of the unit
  • Turn the unit back on.

How to wash electronic air filter- if applicable

Again, please make sure that it’s safe to wash the electronic air filter. There are several methods to clean the filter:

Use a tub or a bathtub

You can wash the electronic cells in a tub with hot water or a bathtub. We recommend using a dishwasher detergent with sodium silicates to protect the aluminum cells.

  • Start by dissolving ¾ cup of automatic dishwasher detergent per cell. Use a large plastic tub to dissolve the detergent.
  • Allow the collection cells to soak for 20 minutes or so.
  • Agitate up and down the cells several times.
  • Take the cells out of the bathtub

Use a dishwasher

Please read the owner’s manual to see if it’s safe to wash the collection cells in the dishwasher. Always use a safe detergent for aluminum, like automatic dishwasher detergent. Never use contact cleaners or coil cleaners for the collector cells.

  • Set four glasses upside down and place the cells on top of them. You will protect the cells from the dishwasher spikes that could, otherwise, break ionizing wires and bend the collector plates.
  • You may also place the pre-filter in the dishwasher
  • Don’t use the drying cycle for the cells. The drying cycle can “bake on” materials that haven’t been removed with washing.
  • Pay attention when taking out the cells from the dishwasher. The sharp edges could hurt you and the cells may be hot.
  • Use a clean cloth to wipe down the wires carefully
  • Wash the cells on a regular schedule.

Use a garden hose

You must use adequate water pressure to wash the filters and electronic cells thoroughly.

  • Place the filters and cells outside the house
  • Attach the spray nozzle on the garden hose to wash off the filter and cells
  • Use safe pressure as you don’t want to bend the collector plates
  • Spray the filter and cells with a household detergent if they are filthy. Allow the detergent to soak for a couple of minutes
  • Spray off the filters and cells.

Important note

Always be sure that it’s safe to wash the filter and collector cells. Allow the cells and filters to air dry before placing them back. Never re-install them until they’re entirely dry. See that the collector plates don’t bend throughout the washing process—end by re-inserting the pre-filters and cells into the unit. Put the door back in and turn on the power.
