Sony WF-SP700N headphones review

Sony WF-SP700N Wireless Noise-Cancelling Headphones – Are They Worth It?

If working out to your favorite music is your thing, you should know by now that good wireless noise-cancelling headphones are one treasure to find. The options are many, but why put your money at stake when you can go with the sure thing instead?

What’s to say briefly about the Sony WF-SP700N headphones?

The true wireless headphones aren’t just affordable, but also dependable in various situations. The new model from Sony ensures an active noise-cancellation tech and impress with the IPX4 sweat-resistant rating. The charging case looks quite attractive and it’s way more functional than the previous models.

Is it better than Sony WF-1000X?

The new model brings plenty improvements and it’s better than the previous model in every way. The Sony WF-1000X made quite a stir and the debate about its qualities was on for quite some time. Some said they cut out any now and then, whereas others never had that issue. Some thought that the headphones didn’t provide enough bass, whereas others were really annoyed as they had too much bass.

Long story short, Sony WF-1000F was pretty far from pleasing everyone, but it did manage to get some fans too. By the looks of it, the same is going to be for the Sony WF-SP700N.

Do we like the design?

Truth be told, even if the new wireless headphones aren’t going to please everyone, they’re still going to make happy plenty of you out there.

  • Their design

When it comes to the aesthetics, the WF-SP700N do make a great first impression. The fit is quite comfortable and their design does remember you of a Sci-Fi movie.

The headphones do look great on many, but they may not be the best option for anyone going with a minimal design.

  • The charging case

It’s going to be a bit challenging to get the headphones from the sturdy grasp of the charging case. When you come to think of it, it’s better that they don’t come out easy- you’re not going to lose them that easy. You may have the same problem when putting them back in- but it’s not mission impossible, don’t worry.

The case is designed for fitting two full charges for the headphones. We truly like the recharging of the headphones: you just slot them back into the case (make sure you have the right orientation) and use the micro USB port on the back for charging. In addition, the charging case comes with NFC built-in so it’s really easy to pair it with an Android device. Once paired, the headphones are going to connect instantly to your device the second you turn them on.

  • The fit

Getting the proper fit is a breeze too and each pair of SP700N comes with several tips and wings so it’s easy to find the perfect fit for each customer.

  • The controls

At the moment, the control area is one area where improvements are more than welcomed. There’s only one button on each of the headphones which you may press for playing/pausing the music. For rewinding you’re going to have to press three times and double pressing is going to help you skip songs. However, you cannot control the volume on the headphones per se.

It’s important to mention that the calls are going to be routed only through the left earphone.

What’s to say about the build?

The earbuds are IPX4 water resistant and they’re going to take a sweat while running, with no problems whatsoever. Unfortunately, they’re not going to take submersion so stay away from puddles and pools while wearing them.

The default silicon ear tips and wings are going to match most customers and the headphones do come with more than one sizing option in the box.

Once you got the right size, you’re never going to feel that they dislodge or fall out of your years during your daily run. The headphones sure feel steady and locked in once you find the right sizing.

How’s the performance?

One thing that the new model does a lot better than the previous WF-1000F is the bass. With the new headphones, you’re sure going to notice the bass. It may even be too much for the picky ones out there.

The sound signature is the main asset for the WF-SP 700N and you’re going to notice the clarity from the mids and highs, ensuring a nice slam. Use the accompanying Sony Headphones app for better tuning. The app is also useful for accessing various noise cancelling modes.

The signal quality is pretty consistent and you may experience some problems in very crowded environments (the headphones aren’t going to be able to hold the connection). When walking in town for some errands or in any other common situations, the headphones are going to perform just fine.

Unfortunately, the SP700N only take two codecs: SBC (the standard for Bluetooth communication) and AAC for your Apple devices. You cannot use LDAC nor aptX HD-they’re enabling Hi-Res Audio playback over Bluetooth.

How’s the noise-cancellation performance?

Sony WF-SP700N in guys earYou shouldn’t get your hopes high when it comes to the active noise-cancellation on the WF-SP700N. Don’t get us wrong; the headphones are able to tune out light background noise, but they may not be the best choice when you go to a crowded meeting or you’re flying abroad.

Just like in the case of the previous models (Sony WI-1000X and Sony WH-1000XM2), you may customize the noise-cancellation. You may tune everything out or tune out everything but the sound of human voice. You may also let in some ambient noise, for the emergency situations.

In a nutshell, the noise cancellation tech is one part that needs improvement, but this doesn’t make it as a deal breaker for many.

How to overcome the downsides?

You may improve the quality of the sound (sacrificing the playback stability) by selecting the “Sound Quality Mode” in the Sony Headphone app. If you’re in a crowded environment, the signal is going to drop out.

What are the pros and cons of the WF-SP700N?

Even if the Sony WF-SP700N isn’t all roses and rainbows, it’s still worth to try, especially if you’re going shopping on a tight budget.

The noise-cancellation and the clarity could use some improvement, but the headphones overcome that with the comfortable wear and sturdiness they provide once they’re placed in the ears.

Here are the pros:

  • They’re comfortable to wear
  • They’re very easy to charge
  • They stay snug fit and don’t fall out easy
  • It’s very easy to find the best fit
  • They’re sweat resistant

The cons are no deal-breakers on our part:

  • The noise-cancellation may be improved
  • The clarity isn’t the best asset

One last thought

Checking almost every checkbox on our list for a pair of wireless headphones, the WF-SP700N stand out with the comfort they give and their sweat-resistant coating.

Sure, some would have liked better noise-cancellation performance, but this shouldn’t make you change your mind about buying these headphones.
